MOHANLAL VISHWANATHAN NAIR


Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair also known as Mohanlal was born on 21st May 1960. Mohanlal is an Indian actor best known as a popular actor and producer in Malayalam cinema. Mohanlal became a film producer in 1990 and his first film to be produced was His Highness Abdullah.

He has also acted in a number of Tamil and Hindi films. His notable movies were Iruvar (1997) which is directed by Mani Ratnam and Company (2002) which is directed by Ram Gopal Varma. As an actor and producer, Mohanlal also owns businesses in film distribution, and restaurants.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Kerala's formation, in an online poll conducted by CNN-IBN he was elected as the most popular Keralite in 2006. In 2001, the government of India honored him with the Padma Shri for his contributions to Indian cinema.Mohanlal has won one special jury award, two best actor awards and also has won four India National Film Awards. Mohanlal is the first actor to get the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army of India in 2009 and received a doctorate from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kerala in 2010.

  • His first movie was Thiranottam which was released in 1978 at the age of 18. He followed his role as a lead antagonist in his first release Manjil Virinja Pookal (1980).

  • As an antagonist in several movies followed before Mohanlal established himself as an actor playing a variety of character types in comedy and action films amongst others.

  • After the success of Rajavinte Makan, he was given the title super star of Malayalam Cinema in 1986 in which he was played as an underworld don.

Awards:

Mohanlal was awarded the Padma Shri award in 2001.

Mohanlal is the first actor to get the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army of India in 2009.

In 2010 he was awarded a Doctorate by Sree Sankaracharya University Of Sanskrit.

  • Mohanalal was getting 60-80l akhs per film earlier and later when he signed to act in College Kumaran movie by Tulasidas, he was offered 1.25 crores for the project. Mohanlal is the highest paid actor in Malayalam cinema. He has been given a pay cheque of 4 crores for his film Nairsan which is directed by Albert. Mohanlal received his first Kerala State Film Award for best actor (1986) for his movie T.P Balagopalan MA, which is directed by Sathyan Anthikad. His performance and hard work in Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam as a harassed house-owner won him the Filmfare Award for Best actor (Malayalam) also. In 1986 Mohanlal appeared in 36 movies. In 1988 he won a Kerala state special jury award for his performance in the movies Padamudra, Aryan, Chithram. In 1990 he produced a movie called His Highness Abdullah under the banner of Pranavam arts.

  • Mohanlal was born in Pathanamthitta in Kerala to Vishwanathan Nair. His father Vishwanathan Nair was an officer in the Kerala Government Secretariat who became the Law Secretary of the state later. His Mother is Santhakumary. Pyarelal was his elder brother, who died in the early part of 2000. His parents belonged to a well known Nair family from Pathanamthitta. He studied at Model school in Thiruvananthapuram, and graduated with a Bcom from Mahatma Gandhi College in Thiruvananthapuram. Mohanlal lives in Thevara, Kochi with his family. He married Suchitra and she was the daughter of Tamil film producer K. Balaji. Mohanlal has two children Vismaya and Pranav. Pranav had acted in a few movies and Mohanlal did not have any objection when his son expressed a desire on acting. He owns a villa in Arabian Ranches and a flat in Burj Khalifa in Dubai. When he was in shooting for the movie Kurukshetra in which he plays the role of an Army officer in 2008, Mohanlal expressed interest to join the Territorial Army of India as an officer. He was formally inducted into the Territorial Army in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by Army Chief Deepak Kapoor on July 9, 2008. Rules had to be changed to accommodate him as men above the age of 42 are not eligible to join the volunteer force.
