But however according to many other records the history of Halloween lies in the ancient Celtic festival called Samhain which is a festival mostly celebrated by the people belonging Gaelic culture at the end of the harvest season. There was a strong belief which says that on this particular day the dead souls gets active and comes to the earth creating trouble for the living souls. Thus to scare of these evil spirits the people in turn used to dress up like monsters. Apart from this bonfires will be lit and bones of the dead animals will be thrown in it.

Legends

Halloween day This legend of Jack-O-Lantern is associated with an Irish folklore. The story goes like Jack the farmer was a big drunkard and a trickster. One day Jack happened to come across a devil and immediately he planned a trick and so he asked the devil to climb the nearby tree to pick some fruit. Once the devil climbed the tree Jack placed a cross on the lower bark, to prevent the demon's exit from the tree. Then he demanded the devil that he will let him go only if the devil promises not to take him to the hell after his death. Soon after Jack's death he was neither allowed to enter the heaven nor the hell.

Jack didn't get his way in the heaven for the violation of law he did on earth. He was also not let in to the hell for the deal he has struck with the devil. But however the devil felt pity on Jack and threw a glowing piece of coal. Jack happened to have a turnip in his pocket and he placed the coal in the big root to make the first Jack-O-Lantern. Thus this is the reason behind why people light the way for they believe on this day the dead may walk along with the other living human beings.
