India November 09(IM): Over the years, Aamir Khan has established himself as the undisputed king of the box office. His last release, Dangal, currently holds the record for the highest-grossing Indian film ever, thanks to its glorious run in China, where it earned over Rs 1000 crore.
Thugs Of Hindostan is no different. The action-adventure film, which also features Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh in pivotal roles, is off to a fantastic start at the box office. The film has raked in Rs 52 crore on its opening day, including the Tamil and Telugu-dubbed versions. The Hindi version alone has made Rs 50.75 crore.
This makes Thugs Of Hindostan the biggest opener of 2018, so far. It has also overtaken the first-day collection of Dangal (Rs 29.78 crore). The fact that Thugs Of Hindostan released across 7000 screens worldwide, as opposed to Dangal's 5300 screens may have had a role to play. Ticket prices were also hiked for Aamir's latest release.
Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, Thugs Of Hindostan revolves around the "thugs" led by the fierce Khudabaksh (Amitabh Bachchan), who pose a threat to the John Clive-led East India Company in 1795 Hindostan. The British recruit Firangi Mallah (Aamir Khan) to infiltrate the band of rebels and get them the leader of the thugs.
Thugs Of Hindostan, which has Aamir and Amitabh sharing screen space for the first time, was one of the most anticipated films of 2018. On Karan Johar's chat show, Aamir revealed that he was "nervous" about the audience's response to the film.
"I am specially nervous about this film for one reason that people are used to seeing my films with some message in it or some new concept. This is a film, which is really a mainstream kind of a film. So I am hoping that people will not get disappointed. I enjoyed doing the film, I hope the audience enjoys it as much," he said
However, Thugs Of Hindostan has failed to live up to the sky-high expectations. Critics have unanimously declared the film as a snoozefest. It remains to be seen if the negative reviews of Thugs Of Hindostan make a significant dent in its box office collection.
However, with three weeks to go for the next big release, Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar-starrer 2.0, things could swing either way.
