DEHRADUN

INTRODUCTION

The picturesque valley of Dehradun,the capital of Uttranchal nestle in the Himalayan range.Dehradun is a very old city. In the Vedic times,Garhwal Mandal,of which Dehradun is a part was known as Kedar Khand.For tourists and pilgrims heading for Rishikesh and Haridwar,as well as those going to Yamunotri-Gangotri,Kedranath-Badrinath and valley of Flowers-Hemkund Sahib,Dehradun is a gateway.Dehradun is a major educational centre boasting of a premier educational institutes such as the Forest Research Institute,Rashtriya Indian Military College,Indian Military Academy a host of public schools and colleges.It has also emerged as a centre for Adventure Tourism Training Programmes.

ORIENTATION

Dehradun is situated in the north Indian state of Uttaranchal around 235 km from Delhi. It is bounded by lesser Himalayan foothills to the North East; the Shivalik Hills to the South West; the Yamuna river to the North West and the Ganges river to the South West.Dehradun extends from the latitude 30° 19' in the North to longitude 78° 04' in the East.

HISTORY

There are folklores which say that Guru Drona Charya established his ashram in Doon valley, after the kurukshetra battle.Dehradun was initially under the reign of the Great king Ashok in 1st century BC and later it was under the control of Mughals followed by Sheikhs, Ghorka and Gharwali emperors. Soon it was captured by the British and they established it as a military base.Buthowever now it is the center of some important offices like Indian Military academy, Survey of India, Forest Research center, Deal, ONGC etc. 

FAIR & FESTIVALS

JHANDA FAIR

This festival is celebrated in remebrance of the arrival of Guru Ram Rai at Dehradun.A fair is held on the sixth day after Holi every year in March/April and a flag (Jhanda) unfurled at the Jhanda Chowk.

SHIVRATHRI

Shivrathri is celebrated with great pomp evry year in the month o Febraury at Tapkeshwar.Devotees of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati throng the Tapkeshwar Temple during the annual Shivratri fair.

LAKHAWAR FAIR

This fair is celebrated in the Lakhawar village during the months of September-October every year. Dance, music, and sports competitions mark the celebrations of the fairs in Dehradun.

PLACES OF INTEREST

SAHASTRADHARA

A cold sulphur water spring having high medicinal value, the dripping caves and a refreshing bath in the Baldi river, all set in a breathtaking environment offer an exhilrating and unforgettable experience.Only 14kms from Dehradun City Bus Stand near clock tower and connected by regular bus service and private taxies, is is an ideal place for family picnic.A tourist bunglow and PWD inspection house are avilable for the tourist. 

TAPKESHWAR TEMPLE

This cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is on the bank of a seasonal river. Here on the Shivling, water falls drop by drop from the lap of a rock and hence the name Tapkeshwar.

It is 5.5km from city bus stand and is situated in the Garhi Cantt.area. It is connected by a regular bus service.

A fair is held every year at this temple on the occasion of Shivaratri.

CHAKRATA

Situated at a distance of 93 km from Dehradun,

at an elevation of about 7000 feet above sea level, Chakrata is known for its serene environs and sylvan charm.

However, Chakrata is restricted for foreigners.

 LAXMAN SIDH

12kms from Dehradun on the way to Rishikesh-Hardwar Road.

The road is motorable upto the temple.

A large number of people throng this temple especially on Sunday.

Legend has it that a Saint underwent penance at this place.

FOREST RESEARCH INSITUTE

is biggest Forest based Training Institute in India. All forest officers are trained here.

DAKPATHAR

45kms from Dehradun, Dakpathar has emerged as a lovely tourist spot in the Western Doon valley. It encompasses lush green lawns and blooming gardens. The vast stretch on the Yamuna river and serrated Shivalik range add to the grandeur of the place. The place is connected by regular bus service from the Parade ground and Highway bus stand near Railway station, Dehradun.

KOTI POWER HOUSE

It is the biggest underground power generating Unit in India is 83kms from Dehradun.

THE SERICULTURE CENTRE

This is yet another interesting research institute dealing with research on the culture of fish and other aquatic creatures in India.

KALSI

About 5kms from Dakpathar,a Ashoka pillar with inscription Devangiri is situated here.This pillar is preserved by the Archeological Survey of India.An Ashoka Roch edict built in 450 BC is also situated here.The pillar is preserevd by the Archeological Survey of India.An Ashoka Rock edict built in 450 BC is also situated here.

THE GREAT STUPA

This Stupa is situated here at Mindrolling monastrey,Clement Town,Dehradun is a unique example of its kind in the world.

This magnificent stupa measuring 185 feet was also seen be here.

It is about 16kms away from Chakrata,with a small Forest Rest House for night halt.

TIGER FALLS

Tiger falls is about 5kms from Chakrata on foot.There is a beautiful water fall falling at a height of 50 mts.

RAJAJI NATIONAL PARK

Spread over an area of 820 sq.kms, the park with its magnificent ecosystem, is nestled in the Shivalikranges.It represents the flora of several zones of the forest, scrub land and grassy pasture lands.

THE CENTRAL BRAILLE PRESS

This institution is the largest producer of textbooks in Braille in India. A visit to this institute is a very interesting and informative experience.

ROBBER'S CAVE

Robber's Cave situated at a distance of about 8kms from the city offers splendid view of the surrounding mountains.

The natural cave formations and gentle streams are very popular among the tourists.

BY AIR

The nearest Jolly Grant Airport is 25 km from Dehradun. It is connected to Delhi with Indian Airlines having five flights a week from Delhi to this airport.

BY RAIL

Dehradun is well linked to all the major cities of the state by trains. There are direct daily trains that come here from Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai, Varanasi, Lucknow and other places. The most notable ones are Shatabdi Express, Mussoorie Express and the Doon Express.
