The low-pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has intensified into a deep depression. According to the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is likely to move west-northwest towards the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coast within the next 24 hours.

According to the update, the low-pressure area is crossing Sri Lanka near Rameswaram and Thoothukudi in the Gulf of Mannar region. As a result, heavy rainfall was recorded in several parts of Tamil Nadu on December 11 night. The system is expected to move further into the Arabian Sea, passing through the Delta and southern Tamil Nadu. Consequently, rainfall is likely to continue in Tamil Nadu on December 12 and 13.

For Chennai, heavy rain is forecast until Thursday night, with a more significant impact expected in the Delta regions. As the system moves towards the Arabian Sea on Friday, the southern districts of Tamil Nadu are predicted to experience increased rainfall. Areas such as Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Theni, and Madurai are expected to receive heavy rainfall from Thursday night through Friday as the system passes through the Gulf of Mannar.

On Thursday morning, rain clouds were observed over the coastal areas from Chennai to Thoothukudi, as well as interior districts of Tamil Nadu, including the Delta and Tirunelveli regions. Rainfall is currently ongoing in northern Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. However, as the rain clouds gradually move towards the interior districts, the Delta and southern districts are expected to experience heavy rain by Friday. Rainfall in Chennai is likely to decrease significantly from Friday.

Private meteorologist Srikanth has stated that heavy rain in Chennai may continue until Thursday evening. Meanwhile, meteorologist Pradeep John has noted that as the low-pressure system approaches the Gulf of Mannar, heavy rainfall is expected in southern Tamil Nadu for the next two days. He further predicted significant rainfall in areas such as Kodaikanal, Mancholai, and other nearby regions.
