Locking a PDF doesn't always mean keeping people out entirely. A lot of the time, the real goal is letting someone read a document while stopping them from printing it, copying the text out, or editing it further. PDF Champ's desktop encryption tool called Protect PDF treats those as two separate things, not one.

There's the open password — the classic lock, where nobody can even see the document without typing in the right password first. Then there's a separate layer of permissions that kick in once someone's already inside the file: printing, copying text, editing the content — each of those can be switched on or off, whether or not there's a password on the file at all.

That split actually matters more often than people expect. Say you're sharing a draft and you don't want anyone lifting paragraphs out of it, but you don't need to gate it behind a password just to be read. Or the opposite — a signed contract that anyone should be able to open and read, but nobody should be able to quietly edit afterward.

How the two settings work together:

·         An open password can be added, left off, or combined with permission restrictions

·         Printing, copying, and editing can each be turned on or off independently

·         Permission restrictions still apply even if there's no open password at all

·         Both settings are written using standard encryption that major PDF readers recognize correctly

"People tend to picture PDF protection as one switch — locked or not," said a PDF Champ product representative.
