Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addresses Winter Tourism Program at Harsil, Uttarakhand

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, participated in the Winter Tourism Program after flagging off a trek and bike rally at Harsil, Uttarakhand. He also performed pooja and darshan at the winter seat of Maa Ganga in Mukhwa.


Addressing the gathering, he expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident in Mana village and extended condolences to the affected families. He assured them that the nation stands in solidarity with them. The Prime Minister highlighted the spiritual significance of Uttarakhand and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to visit again.  


Shri Modi recalled his statement at Baba Kedarnath that this decade would be Uttarakhand’s decade. He emphasized that the state's progress is being realized through continuous achievements and new milestones.


He congratulated the Uttarakhand government for promoting winter tourism and making efforts to sustain tourism year-round. He remarked that tourism should not have an "off-season" in Uttarakhand. He noted that increasing winter tourism would boost the local economy and provide employment opportunities.  


The Prime Minister highlighted the need to develop infrastructure to support tourism throughout the year. He mentioned the Char Dham All-Weather Road, modern expressways, and the expansion of rail, air, and helicopter services.


He also spoke about the Kedarnath and Hemkund Ropeway projects, which will significantly reduce travel time. He noted that thousands of crores are being invested in these projects to improve accessibility. These efforts, he said, will enhance the overall travel experience in Uttarakhand.  


Shri Modi appreciated the Uttarakhand government's initiative to develop eco-log huts, convention centers, and helipads. He mentioned the restoration of Mana and Jadung villages, which were once abandoned. He noted that the number of tourists visiting Uttarakhand has increased significantly over the past decade.


He stated that the Char Dham Yatra now attracts nearly 50 lakh pilgrims annually, up from 18 lakh before 2014. He reiterated the government's commitment to Uttarakhand’s development.  


The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of promoting tourism in border areas. He highlighted the Vibrant Village Program, which includes 10 villages in this region. He stated that efforts have begun to resettle Nelong and Jadung villages.


He encouraged the development of homestays and announced that those building homestays would receive benefits under the Mudra Yojana. He lauded the growing number of homestays, which are boosting tourism and local incomes.  


Shri Modi appealed to the corporate sector, universities, and private schools to organize winter events in Uttarakhand. He introduced the concept of "Gham Tapo Tourism," encouraging people to enjoy Uttarakhand’s winter sunshine.

He noted the vast potential of the MICE sector in Uttarakhand. He urged the Indian film industry to consider the state for winter shoots. He also promoted the idea of Uttarakhand as a destination for winter weddings.  


The Prime Minister called for a 360-degree approach to promote winter tourism. He suggested organizing special wildlife safaris, winter yoga retreats, and wellness spas. He urged local stakeholders to study international models of winter tourism.


He appealed to young content creators to showcase Uttarakhand’s beauty. He proposed a competition for short films promoting tourism in Uttarakhand. He concluded by expressing confidence in Uttarakhand’s year-round tourism campaign.
