India among the top 10 countries with high prevalence of type 1 diabetes do you know the symptoms

India September 22(IM): An estimated 8.4 million people were living with type 1 diabetes globally in 2021 and India was among the top 10 countries with the highest prevelance of the condition, states a modelling study published in the The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal. And by 2040, this number is expected to rise to 13.5 to 17.5 million. Experts say that with these results at hand, people have an opportunity to save millions of lives in the coming decades by simply increasing awareness about the early signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes to facilitate 100 per cent diagnosis in all countries.

In 2021, the model estimated that among the 8.4 million people with diabetes, 18 per cent were younger than 20 years of age, 64 per cent were aged 20 59 years and 19 per cent were over 60. Apart from India, other countries with the highest prevalence of this condition are US, Brazil, China, Germany, Spain, Canada, UK, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

What is type 1 diabetes

Type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin dependent or juvenile diabetes, is a chronic condition characterised by little or no insulin production by the pancreas. Insulin is a hormone that helps the cells absorb sugar or glucose from the blood in the form of energy thereby regulating blood sugar levels as well.

Type 1 diabetes usually appears during adolescence however, it can affect adults as well. Singer Nick Jonas is also a patient of type 1 diabetes. The condition can be triggered by exposure to some viruses or due to genetic factors, but it has no cure. All that one can do is work towards managing blood glucose levels by abstaining from sugar, carbohydrates and eating more fats and proteins, following a healthy lifestyle and using insulin shots when required.

What are the symptoms of type 1 diabetes

The first step towards managing type 1 diabetes is by being informed about its symptoms. The sooner it is diagnosed the better for the patient.

According to a Mayo Clinic, the following are the key early symptoms of type 1 diabetes

1. Urinating too often

2. Feeling more thirsty than usual

3. Feeling too hungry

4. Unexplained weight loss

5. Blurry vision

6. Fatigue and weakness

7. New bed wetting in children

8. Irritability and mood changes
