Jyothika Saravanan is an Indian actress who appeared in Tamil films. She has also acted in a Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu and also Hindi films. She has also gained critical acclaim for her performances in Kushi, Perazhagan, Chandramukhi and Mozhi, winning three Film fare awards and three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.

She was one of the most successful actresses in the Tamil film industry. She has also won Kalaimamani award. Her performance in Mozhi and Chandramukhi took her very close to winning the National Film Award for Best Actress. She has won 11 Nominations at Film fare.

In the film Chandramukhi the title role was played by Jyothika while Prabhu Ganesan and Nayantara were also given leading roles. It was released on 14 April 2005 in India, coinciding with Tamil New Year. About 2 crore tickets were sold worldwide. This was the first Tamil film to beat the six-year record set made by Padayappa. Jyothika won many awards for her excellent performance in this movie and so including a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress and several others.

  • Doli Saja Ke Rakhna in 1988 is a Bollywood romance film which was directed by Priyadarshan. The story is adapted from the Malayalam film Aniyathipravu which was directed by Fazil.

  • It includes Akshaye Khanna and Jyothika in the leading roles. The music for this film was done by A. R. Rahman. Though the film DOLI SAJA KE RAKHNA did not do well at the box office, Jyothika was noticed by the Tamil and Telugu industry.

  • She then proceeded to act in Kollywood, where she debuted a guest appearance in Vaali. Jyothika also won the Film fare Award for the Best Newcomer for this film. Her first Tamil movie as a heroine was Poovellam Kettuppar with Surya.

  • Jyothika has appeared in many of the commercials like Idhayam, Paragon footwear , RmKV, etc .She was also the brand ambassador for RmKV silk sarees and has a wardrobe hub in Chennai. Then later she appeared in ads of Aircel and Nescafe along with her husband Suriya.


  • She has made her acting debut in the Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna which was directed by Priyadarshan. Her first role was a cameo appearance in Vaali in 1999 for which she won Film fare Award for Best Female Debut – South. It was also a great entry for her in south along with Ajith Kumar. Later, she starred in Poovellam Kettuppar, in which she had played the love interest of the protagonist, by Suriya.

  • The success of the movie Kushi became a turning point in her career. A string of successful films followed her between 2000 and 2002 , among them were Mugavaree , Dum Dum Dum and Snegithiye.She had also acted with actor Kamal Haasan during this period, in the comedy film named Thenali. She was also awarded as the Film fare Best Tamil Actress Award for her role in Kushi. Though her role in Rhythm was small, it has been widely appreciated.

  • She then collaborated with Mani Ratnam for the first time by appearing in his production house, Madras Talkies' romantic comedy called Dumm Dumm Dumm alongside Madhavan. The film became a success not only in Tamil Nadu but also in Andra with it's dubbed version. She also made an appearance in Kannada film industry with Sandalwood Superstar Upendra.

  • She had dual role in this film. Her last films were Gautham Menon's Pachaikili Muthucharam and the critically acclaimed Mozhi, both were in 2007.Among these Mozhi , gave her a lot of appreciation with the character Archana. She is deaf and she is mute. But she makes all of us talk about her performance. Her performance in Mozhi took her very close to win the National Film Award for Best Actress. However, she lost the award by a very narrow margin at the end.


  • Jyothika was born to Chander Sadanah, a film producer and Seema Sadanah, in Mumbai, India. Actress Nagma is her half-sister. Jyothika had completed her schooling in Learner's Academy, Mumbai. She later finished her Psychology studies at the Mithibai College in Mumbai. She also has a sister named Roshini and also a brother Suraj, who is working as an assistant director for Priyadarshan.Jyothika was married to actor Suriya on 11 September 2006, with whom she was paired up in seven films; Poovellam Kettuppar, Uyirile Kalanthathu, Kaakha Kaakha, Perazhagan,Maayavi, June R and Sillunu Oru Kaadhal. These couple have two children, daughter Diya, born on 10th of August 2007 and a son Dev, born 7th of June 2010.
