Location :
The Asvakranta temple is located in north of Guwahati in Assam. The temple is one of the important and the greatest Vishnu shrines of Assam, the very famous Asvakranta temple is located on a rocky stratum touching the waterfront of the Brahmaputra.

Significance of the Temple

The deity here is referred to as Anantasayin Vishnu. The word 'Anantasayin' refers the reclining position of Lord Vishnu on the body of a serpent, as been depicted by the idol. An idol of Lord Brahma is depicted seated on a lotus, which emerges from the navel of Lord Vishnu. Other idols here at the temple complex are of Goddess Mahamaya and two demons, Madhu and Kaitabha, which are located at one corner of the shrine.

Two rows of 'nagakanyas' or female serpent figures are seen praying to the lord with their hands folded. The shrine is adorned with artistic carvings.

Legend defines the word Asvakranta with the literal meaning as 'ascended by horses'. It is at this place that Sri Krishna camped with his army before he defeated and killed the demon Narakasur.

Asvakranta Temple
Asvakranta Temple is associated with Krishna-Rukmini episode. It has been said that Krishna's Asva (horse) was encircled (akranta) by the enemies at this particular place. There is a strong belief of some people that the place should be caged as Asvakranta indicating that Krishna on his way from Kundil Nagar to Dwaraka who had to rest here as his horse became tired (klanta).

Kurmajanardan and Anantasayi
The Footprints of Lord Krishna is being said to be found at the rocky outcrop at the eastern side bordering the river. It allegedly contains a footprint, which is supposed to be that of Krishna. The devotees visit this place to perform 'Shraddha' ceremonies of the departed souls regularly in the temple.


Aarparuat
The Aarparuat or the flat-topped Screen-Hill is very much a small Island, only of 100 metres off the bank of Brahmaputra River. Apart from its natural beauty, there is an island which is the abode of thousands of white cranes, which offer added attraction to the visitors.
