The famous Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple is known as a very highly valued shrine of the Hindus. Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple is located 5 kms from Raipur on the banks of river Kharun,Chhatisgarh.

The chief deity of the Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple is Lord Shiva. The Hatkeshwar Mahadev Temple was built in 1402 by Hajiraj Naik during the rule of Brahmadeo Rai, son of Kalchuri King Ramachandra. Brahmadeo Rai`s monumental script in Sanskrit is still preserved at the Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum.

This profusely carved 17th century temple is just outside the town and it enshrines Hatkeshwar Mahadev, the family deity of Nagar Brahmins, who were once a prominent community in Vadnagar.

The temple's inner sanctum or the complex here houses a Shiva linga said to have self-emerged (swayambhu). From the roof of the sanctum a massive shikhar soars high into the sky. Facing east, the temple is enclosed by a high wall topped by three circular domes interspersed with flat stretches in the Indo-Saracenic tradition.

The exterior of the temple is exquisitely ornamented with figures of the nine planets, musicians, evocative dancing apsaras, regent deities, the chief gods of the Hindu pantheon, scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and varied animal and floral motifs. The premises of the temple also have an ancient Kashivishveshvara Shiva temple, a Swaminarayan temple and two Jain temples.

The Nag King who built the temple was the grand father of Babrovahan was Hatak and therefore Lord Shiva who was the principal deity, whose penance Babrovahan carried out was, called Lord Hatakeshwar.

It is believed that the king Babrovahan joined his father Arjun and established a temple of Lord Hatkeshwar at Vadnagar.

  1. Through Airways : the Nearest airport is Ahmedabad (111km) Chhattisgarh has a domestic airport in state capital, Raipur, which is connected to almost all the important airports of the country. Indian Airlines here operates frequent flights to Raipur from various destinations of India. From Raipur buses and taxis are available for different parts of the state.

  2. Through Railways : Siddhapur is a railway station on Ahmedabad - New Delhi railway line, 42 km from Vadnagar. Raipur and Bilaspur are two major railway heads of Chhattisgarh. These railway stations are served by a number of express trains from all over the country. Raipur is situated between Mumbai and Howrah, two major railheads of west and east, so several important trains pass through this railway station regularly.

  3. Through Roadways : Good network of roads criss-cross the state of Chhattisgarh. National Highway No. 6, 16 and 43 connect to all the important cities and towns of Chhattisgarh with each other and also with other parts of the country. Mehsana (47km), Ahmedabad (111km) are the nearest towns.
