  • He was a naxalite before he entered the film industry. He left the naxalites and joined the Mumbai film industry. Mirgaya was Mithun's debut flick. It was in the year 1976 he made his film debut. The film helped Mithun to get attention from the film critics even before the audience got attention of him. The film helped Mithun to win the best actor award at the national level. And this brought all the spotlight and attention on him. He was critically appreciated for his performance in the film and was also highly honored for the same.

  • But this did not help Mithun become popular. The people demanded more from him and expected him to show more of his talent but unfortunately he did not get any offers even though his performance in the first film was highly praised. The initial career of the actor was filled with so much of struggle and hard work. Filmmakers used this award winning actor for just name sake. He made guest roles in Do Anjane and Phool Khile Gulshan Gulshan which failed to get him any recognition.

  • He shot into the prominence of spotlight in the late 1970's with a low budget film , directed by Ravikant Nagaich, a spy film Surakshaa in the year 1979 and in the early 1980's he did leading roles in a number of hit films such as Hum Paanch in the year 1980 and Wardaat in the year 1981 which is a sequel to Surakshaa. Mithun's breakthrough performance finally came in the musical drama film Disco Dancer in the year 1982 which became a huge success and remains a cult favorite till this date.

  • This film along with other musical films such as Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki in the year 1984 and Dance Dance in the year 1987 helped him to present himself as a talented dancer. Then Chakraborty starred in a lot of successful romantic and family dramas during the 1980's such as Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye in the year 1983, Pyaar Jhukta Nahin in the year 1985, Swarg Se Sunder in the year 1986, and Pyaar Ka Mandir in the year 1988. These films remained as his most commercially successful films till date.

  • He was then widely recognized as an action hero for hit films like Wanted in the year 1983, Boxer in the year 1984, Jagir in the year 1984, Jaal in the year 1986, Watan Ke Rakhwale in the year 1987, Commando in the year 1988, Waqt Ki Awaaz in the year 1988, Guru in the year 1989, Mujrim in the year 1989 and Dushman in the year 1990. Around the mid 1980's he was regarded as a competitor to Amitabh Bachchan, as both often played an angry young protagonist at odds with the ills of civilization and bribery.

  • Chakraborty worked with some of the prime actresses of his time and Bollywood in general that includes Zeenat Aman, Padmini Kolhapure, Rati Agnihotri, Rekha, Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. Parallel to his career of Bollywood, Mithun Chakraborty had already chalked up an array of so successful and not so successful films in his native language Bengali, as well as in the realistic or arthouse movies, where his trained acting resulted in him receiving quite a few awards and accolades for his performance.

  • Troyee, a film made in the year 1982 with Debashree Roy and Anil Chatterjee, was a huge success. After his move to Mumbai and his huge popularity as a star in the mainstream Hindi movies, there was a lull in Mithun's appearances in the mainstream Bengali movies, but he still continued to appear in arthouse movies like well-known director Buddhadeb Dasgupta's Tahader Katha in the year 1992 which won him the second National Award in the year 1993. A third National Award followed in the 1995 but this time for the Best Supporting Actor category , for his overwhelming portrayal of Ramakrishna Paramhansa, in G V Iyer's film Swami Vivekananda.
