Sri Devi is one amongst the few Tamil actresses out there who have made it so big in the world of cinema especially by making a mark for herself in the industry of Indian Bollywood cinema.

She is one actress who has worked in a large number of Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films. Sridevi was born in Meenampatti village near Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. She was born in a Tamil speaking family.

Her father Ayyapan was a lawyer and her mother was Rajeswari, who had moved to Chennai from Nellore, Andhra Pradesh. Sridevi also has a sister named Srilatha and two stepbrothers named Satish and Anand from her father's earlier marriage. She has cousins Maheswari and Karthik, who have also appeared in films.

Sri Devi's journey in the world showbiz for the past 44 years is certainly worth all the appreciation and praise. All the way from South Sridevi has come a long way. She has gone on to act in various roles in over 200 movies which includes 63 in Hindi, 62 in Telugu, 58 in Tamil and 21 in Malyalam in a career that has spanned from 1967 to till date.

  • Sri Devi first appeared in films as a child artist. Her first film as a child artist was in the film Kandan Karunai in the year 1967. Then she did a lot of films as a child artist and earned a good name for herself for her acting skill at such a tender age.

  • Her first ever solo lead debut was made in the film Pathinaaru Vayathinilae in the year 1977. Her big break was given by the ace film director K. Balachander in this film. The film was a hit and earned her a lot of appreciation for her performance in the film.

  • She is one amongst the top actresses of her time. She was reportedly paid a sum of rupees 50 lakhs during her peak time in acting.



  • She started her career as a child artist in the Tamil film Kandan Karunai where in which she played the role of the Hindu god Lord Muruga. Her acting in this film was very much applauded and then she acted in a lot of films as a child artist.


  • Then later when she grew up to a beautiful woman, she acted in supporting roles in the start with the films Julie in the year 1975 and Jaise Ko Taisa in the year 1973. Then ace director K. Balachander gave her a big hit in Kollywood with the film Moondram Mudichu. Her performance was stunning and it helped her attain all the name and fame that she is enjoying at present.

She did films like Gayathri, Dharma Yuddham, Priya, Johnny, Ranuva Veeran, Pokkiri Raja, Thanikattu Raja, Adutha Varisu and Naan Adimai Illai with Rajinikath.


  • Then she starred in a number of films in various industries of Kollywood, Tollywood and Mollywood. It was in the year 1975 she made her Bollywood debut as an actor in the film Julia but it was actually in the year 1979 she made her Bollywood debut as the lead in the film Solvan Sawan which was a remake of her own Tamil film 16 Vayathinile. Then she did a number films in all the industries and she was one of the top actresses of her time.

  • Then she took rest for nearly 16 years and then she made a come back with a bang with her film English Vinglish. She has also done many tv shows.



  • Sridevi lost her dad when she was shooting for the film Lamhe and her mom, while shooting for the film Judaai. She lost her parents at a very young age. There was a rumour during the period between the year 1986 and 1987 that Sri Devi had an affair with the Bollywood actor Mithun Chakravorty. But, the relationship ultimately came to an end, when Mithun refused to divorce his wife Yogita Bali. On June 2, 1996, Sridevi tied knots with the film producer Boney Kapoor. They now have two daughters, the first named Janvi and the next named Khushi.
