She made our mouth open wide with her bold performance in the film The Dirty Picture in the year 2012. It was where she who proved that even heroine centric roles can do well and she gave the other top male actors a run for their money.

She gave the film directors and the producers the courage to produce a women-centric film in a big industry which is dominated by men. She is few among the Tamil girls who have made it big in the industry of showbiz and in the industry of Bollywood. She was born to father P.R.Balan, vice president of ETC channel and mother is a house wife.

  • She may be ruling the Bollywood industry now but her film debut was made in Mollywood industry with the Malayalam film Chakram. The film did not take off due to various undisclosed reasons. So technically her film debut was in the Bengali film Bhalo Theko in the year 2003. The film was received well at the box office and her performance in the film was appreciated both by the film critics and the audience.

  • Her Bollywood debut was made only three years after that is in the year 2006 in the film Parineeta. She was praised for her excellent performance by both the film critics and the audience which also fetched her the Best Debutant Award-Female.

National Film Awards:

The National Film Award is the most prominent film award ceremony in India. It is presented by the Indian government's Directorate of Film Festivals. She won it for her role in The Dirty Picture.

Asian Film Awards:

The Asian Film Awards are presented annually by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society to recognize the excellence of the film professionals in the film industries of Asian cinema. Vidya Balan has received one nomination.

Filmfare Awards :

The Filmfare Awards are presented annually by The Times Group to respect both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Hindi language film industry of India. Vidya Balan has won four awards from seven nominations.

Apsara Film and Television Producers Guild Awards:

The Apsara Film and Television Producers Guild Awards is offered by the Bollywood film industry to honor and recognize the professional excellence of their peers. Vidya Balan has received three awards from four nominations.

BIG Star Entertainment Awards:

The BIG Star Entertainment Awards is an award ceremony for the Hindi film industry. Vidya Balan has won two awards from three nominations.

  • It has been said that Vidya being able to get box office hits without having an A-listed male in the film is being paid very less than what the other actresses are being paid. Even actresses who make box office hits by acting with A-listed males are being paid rupees 4-6 cores whereas Vidya Balan is being paid just rupees 2-4 crore per film even after the huge success of her film The Dirty Picture in which she was the main lead of the film.

  • It all started with Vidya Balan being casted in a Malayalam film named Chakram opposite Mohanlal. But unfortunately the movie was shelved and was not released. Then she started focusing on television projects and she did a lot of advertisement and serials like Hum Paanch and also appeared in several music videos with popular artists. Then she made her film debut with a Bengali film Bhalo Theko and her performance was appreciated by both the film critics and the audience.

  • It was after 3 years she made her Bollywood debut in the year 2006 in the film Parineeta. Her excellent performance in the film was well received and appreciated by both the film critics and the audience. The role also fetched her the Best Debutant Award-Female. In the same year she also starred in the blockbuster film Lage Raho Munna Bhai.

  • In the year 2007 she starred in the ace director Mani Ratnam's film Guru in which Abhishek Bachan and Aishwariya Rai were also the lead where she portrayed the character of a girl suffering from multiple sclerosis. Then she lined it up with films like Salaam-e-Ishq, Eklavya: The Royal Guard, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. All these films were box office hits and these films proved her versatility of acting and it also proved that she's not the one who can fit only to one mould but can take up any mould according to the need of the character and the film.

  • In the year 2009 she starred in the film Paa in which she portrayed the character of a young single mother who is struggling to grow her son who is affected by progeria syndrome. The role in this film was not a usual mom role which is normally portrayed in Bollywood films. The role was a different one and a challenging one and it got rave reviews both from the film critics and the audience.

  • She did not move away from the spirit of doing different. Then in the year 2010 she starred in the film Ishqiya opposite Nasrudeen Shah where she portrayed the role of a seductive widow. She again won appreciation for her performance from both the film critics and the audience. In the year 2011 she acted in the film No One Killed Jessica along with Rani Mukherjee.

  • Her role in the film was appreciated though the film did not do well at the box office. It was in the same year 2011 she became the women icon by doing women-centric role and made it a big huge hit. The film was nothing other than the most anticipated film The Dirty Picture in which she essayed the role of yesteryear sexy actress Silk Smitha and was in all praise for her bold performance in the film.

  • She then in the year 2012 went on with the film Kahaani, again a women-centric film in which she portrayed a character of a pregnant women who is searching for her lost husband in the city of Mumbai during the festive season of Durga Pooja. And her film Ferrari Ki Sawaari was also received well at the box office and by the audience.


  • The actress admitted that she was in a relationship with Siddharth Roy Kapur, UTV. They tied the nuptial knot on Dec 14, 2012 at the Green Mile bungalow in Bandra, Mumbai.As Vidya Balan is a Tamilian and Siddharth is Punjabi, their wedding was also a mix of South Indian and Punjabi styles. According to reports, it took over an hour to finalize all the rituals.
