Interior designing is the process of shaping the experience of interior space. So it's not just interior decoration but it usually involves aspects of environmental psychology, architecture and product design. While some would say it is just the art of putting some furniture together, interior designers beg to differ. Many a time, an interior designer works closely with the architect to define the finer nuances of a home or office. However, these are absolutely different branches looking at different aspects of a home/ office. While your architect will tell you the dimensions of your bathroom and even the tiles to be used, your interior designer will tell you the best fittings and how the bathroom will compliment your mood.




There is quite a big debate on that front. Everyone agrees that you need to be a creative person if you want to be an interior designer. However, some feel that you need added qualifications. You need creativity, financial acumen, interest and knowledge of materials to be a good interior designer. One who has an eye for detail and loves solving cryptic puzzles would make a good interior designer.The key word is interest. The rest falls in after that. Create a checklist and tick from interest, creativity, financial knowledge and the willingness to learn about brick and mortar.

If you do that and you are intrinsically good at design, you will surely shine. The first step in developing a new design or altering an existing one is to determine the needs of the client, the ultimate function for which the design is intended, and its appeal to customers or users. When creating a design, designers often begin by researching the desired design characteristics, such as size, shape, weight, color, materials used, cost, ease of use, fit and safety. After consulting with the client, Designers then prepare sketches or diagrams by hand or with the aid of a computer to illustrate the vision for the design. In big projects, a creative director or a product development team of designers create detailed designs, using drawings, a structural model, computer simulations, etc.

School of Interior Design, Ahmedabad offers Five-year programme and J.J School of Arts, Mumbai offers 4 years Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA). Unlike many other careers, interior design inevitably requires both a strong aptitude as well as a creative talent in the field.

Interior design is an immensely rewarding profession. Earnings for interior designers varies widely depending on the type of design they do. Beginners monthly salary range between, Rs. 5000 to Rs. 8000 while established designers gets Rs.50,000 to Rs. 75,000.
