Heaping your plate with a generous portion of broccoli is an excellent strategy for healthy eating—but not if you drown it in butter or cheese sauce. Follow the example in this recipe and use a flavoursome olive oil-lemon dressing to flavour steamed broccoli.This is a perfect recipe for diabetic patients.


Freshly grated lemon zest
: 1 tsp
Lemon juice
: 2 tbsp
Extra-virgin olive oil
: 1 tbsp
Garlic cloves, crushed
: 2
Pinch chilli flakes
Freshly ground black pepper
: to taste
Broccoli, cut into florets
: 1
Toasted flaked almonds
: 1 tbsp

Broccoli with lemon


  • Whisk lemon zest, lemon juice, oil, garlic, chilli and black pepper in a large bowl.
  • Microwave broccoli florets until crisp-tender. Add to the bowl with lemon dressing and toss to coat well. Top with almonds.
  • Serve immediately. (The lemon juice will cause the broccoli to discolour.)
