RICE (ARISI) UPMA Vegetarian-Dish

This dish is known for its humbleness and simplicity.Back in the days, this upma is prepared in a bronze pot (vengala paanai). The slightly burnt upma stuck to the bottom of the pot is to die for. Fast forward to present, this is made in a kadai, pressure cooker or rice cooker.


: 1 cup
Redgram Dal
: 2 tbsp
Cumin seeds
: 1 tsp
: 4 to 5
: 2 cups
: 3 tsp
Mustard seeds
: 1/2 tsp
Bengal gram dal
: 1/2 tsp
Black gram dal
: 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves
: 3 to 4
: To taste

Rice (Arisi) Upma


  • Grind the rice, toor dal, jeera and pepper into fine rawa in the mixer.
  • Add to this, 2 cups of water, salt and microwave on high for 10 minutes, stirring twice in between.
  • In a closed microwave safe bowl, add the oil, rai, chana dal and urad dal and micro high for 1 minutes. Add curry leaves and mix well with the upma.
  • Allow 2 minutes standing time.
  • Delicious rice upma is ready to eat. Serve with chutney and jaggery.
