Tomato Rasam is a very staple diet in the South Indian household. The tomatoes in this rasam can be kept as pieces or ground into a puree and had as a soup. Serve it with hot rice, topped with ghee and a South Indian vegetable of your choice, like beetroot curry, carrot curry, pavaikkai curry etc.
Tomato or tomato puree

Cook the red gram dal for 15-20 minutes with sufficient water, turmeric and few drops of oil, checking in between for sufficiency of water.
- Add the tomatoes or puree, salt, rasam powder, asafoetida and curry leaves and microwave high for 5 minutes.
- Season with coriander seeds and coriander leaves.
