The United Nations Day is celebrated on 24th October to mainly know about the aims, objectives and achievements of the UNO. This was officially announced in the year 1948 by the United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations day was officially confirmed based on the charter prepared earlier by the members of the council, France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States.

This day is a global observance and was not a public holiday till 1971 after which the UN recommended that United Nations Day should be a public holiday at least in member states. The main function for the members of the council is security, human rights, world peace, economical and international development and social progress.

The United Nations day celebration also includes other associations like the World Health Organization (WHO); the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF); International Labour Organization (ILO); United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); and United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).The United Nations Day is celebrated by all the United Nations offices across the world. The celebrations become a part of the United Nations Week which is celebrated just a week before the United Nations Day.

History and Origin

The history behind this day had its foundation when the Treaty of Versailles was proposed which was to stop the World War I.The main aim behind this treaty was to encourage disarmament, prevent outbreaks of war, encourage negotiations and diplomatic measures to settle international disputes and to improve the quality of life around the world. But however only during the end of World War II or to be more precise during the UN Conference on International Organization in San Francisco in 1945, the ideas around the United Nations were developed. Finally only after the ratification of the UN charter on October 24th it was officially created.

Symbol

United Nations Day The UN emblem is mostly blue with print done on a white or blue back ground of the UN flag. It has got a projection of the globe centered on the North Pole where the projection is surrounded by images of olive branches, representing peace. Except Antarctica all the other continents are depicted and the emblem also has four concentric circles representing degrees of latitude.

Celebrations

The major celebrations of the United Nations Day include display about the goals and achievements of the organization. There are various discussions and meetings held across the world. The United Nations day is celebrated mainly in educational institutions like international schools and colleges. The main offices of the UN take an active participation in the celebration like concerts; flying the UN flag on important buildings; debates on the relevance of the work of the UN in modern times; and proclamations by state heads and other leaders. The main offices in New York, The Hague (Netherlands), Geneva (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria) and Nairobi (Kenya) takes active part in celebration.
