HEADLINES:  

Indian railway carries about 7,500 million passengers annually or more than 20 million passengers daily and 2.8 million tons of freight daily. In 2011-2012 Indian Railways earned 104,278.79 crore (US$18.87 billion) which consists of 69,675.97 crore (US$12.61 billion) from freight and 28,645.52 crore (US$5.18 billion) from passengers tickets.

The net revenue of the Indian Railways is likely to grow by 32.93 per cent to Rs 11,993.13 crore in 2011-12 compared to revised estimated income for this fiscal.


The Railways got a net revenue of Rs 9,021.86 crore for 2010-11, as against an earlier projection of Rs 9,781.55 crore.

The Railways has proposed a Rs 57,630 crore plan investment during 2011-12, making it the highest ever annual outlay by the sector.
