The biscuit market in India is estimated to be Rs 10,000 crore (US$ 1.84 billion) and the industry is also gearing up to aggressively tap the medium and premium segment within the country over the next couple of years.
The biscuit industry in India witnessed annual growth as below in the last couple of years:- - 2008-09 - 16%
- 2009-10 - 14%
- 2010-11 - 11%
- 2011-12 - 11%
- 2012-13 - 09% (April-September 2012)
While the growth rate has been stagnating during last 4 years, it picked up momentum during the 2008-09 mainly on account of exemption from Central Excise Duty on biscuits with MRP up to Rs.100/per kg, as per Union Budget for 2007-08. However growth further declined from 2009-10 to 2011-12 and the first half of 2012-13.
