Sugar production in India was 15% lower during the 2016-17 season compared with the previous year due to a drought in Karnataka and Maharashtra. Indian mills are likely to produce 21.3 million tonnes of sugar during the year, the lowest in seven year and 9% lower than the industry estimates.
In 2015-16, the Indian Sugar mills produced 25.1 million tonnes. The sugar season begins in October and lasts until September the following year. As per ISMA�s estimates, the 2016-17 sugar season closed with 4.85 million tonnes of surplus stocks. India�s domestic consumption of sugar is estimated at over 25 million tonnes per year.
