INTRODUCTION

This is India's Land's End, the tip of peninsular India where the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea meet. The confluence of these three places is also referred as 'Thriveni Sangamam'.Kanyakumari otherwise popularly known as Cape Comorin is supposed to be a famous pilgrim centre and a beach resort. The unique feature of Kanyakumari is the view of Sunrise and the Sunset where lot of tourists assembles at the shore to witness this breathtaking sight. With long stretches of sands of many hues, the beach offers a welcome change. As an entertainment for the tourists coming here there are also lot of adventure activities like trekking, biking, swimming and surfing.

The beach is located in the in the southern most end of the India.

The best time to visit Kanyakumari is from November to March.

Kanyakumari Beach

The Kanyakumari beach has the unique feature of rocky shoreline with different hues of sand.

The waves here seem to be quite rough and care should be taken when you go for a surfing or a sea bath.

The beach also accommodates a lighthouse from where one can get a breathtaking view of the endless sky.

You can shop for shells and coir items that are for sale on the Kanyakumari beach.

Kanyakumari Temple

This is a temple dedicated to lord Kanyakumari, one of the incarnations of Parvati, the consort of Shiva.

Kumari Amman temple is also famous for the deity adorned with the diamond nose ring that is believed to be guiding the fisherfolk and the ships sailing the sea.

The temple overlooks the shoreline and is not open for non-Hindus.

The temple is open to public from 0430 to 1130 and from 1730 to 2030.

Gandhi Mandapam

The Gandhi Mandapam is situated very close to the Kumari Amman Temple and it is the place where the urn containing the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi was kept before a portion of which was immersed in the three seas.

The magical feature of this temple is that it is constructed in such a way that on October 2nd, the rays of the sun falls exactly on the urn.

The tourists visiting this spot never miss out the Gandhi Mandapam.

Vivekananda Memorial Rock

The colossal 133ft.Thiruvalluvar statue constructed using blocks of granite is another attraction of this centre.

Vivekananda Memorial Rock has been constructed on a rock formation that has cropped out of the sea, where Swamy Vivekananda did penance during his visit to Kanyakumari.

Vivekananda Memorial Rock is at a distance of about 500m away from the mainland and attracts a large number of tourists.

From ancient times, even before the temple was built,

the rock was considered a sacred place and was known as 'Sripada Parai' meaning that the rock is blessed by the touch of feet of 'Devi Kumari'.

SHOPPING

Shopping in Kanyakumari is quite interesting especially to buy the handicraft products made out of bamboo, cane and wood.Palmleaf drawings are one of the unique buys from Kanyakumari.Tourists visiting Kanyakumari beach collects souvenirs from the stalls set up by the local people near the beach area. They sell various kind of decorative items made from sea shells. There one will also find jewelry made with the sea shells. Apart from the shore side shops the Tamil Nadu Co-optex Sales Emporium is a favorite shopping destination.

ADVENTURE SPORTS

The Baywatch Water Park at a distance of about 2 km away from Kanyakumari on Kovalam Road. This park entertains the tourists by water sports which include slides, roller coasters, artificial waterfalls and wave pools.

By Air

The nearest airport is Trivandrum, which is some 80-km away from here. The airport is frequented by flights from all the major cities of India.

By Trains

Tirunelvelli is the nearest rail head around 80 km away. Trains from stations of Delhi, Mumbai and Trivandrum come to Kanyakumari through a broad gauge railway network.

By Road

Kanyakumari is very well connected to all the major cities in the Southern India. Tourist buses, both luxury coaches and state transport buses ply in and out of Kanyakumari with good frequency.
