INTRODUCTION

The Maravanthe beach comes under the Kundapur Town in Udupi District and it extends about 2 kms parallel to the national highways which in turn are flanked by the Sowparnika River on the other side of the highway. In recent years Maravanthe is gaining more importance in the tourism industry of South India.

To experience the serenity of this picturesque virgin beach one can take a drive along the beach through NH 17 that offers a magnificent view of the Arabian Sea on one side and Sowparnika River on the other. The most signified feature of this beach is the sunset with its golden sun rays bestowing a splendid feeling.Maravanthe beach is very much noted for its adventurous water sports and it is extremely safe for swimming because of moderate tides.

One should never miss the aquatic turtles in the Maravanthe beach. You almost get to have glimpse of every type of turtle right at your focal point. Thus the endless stretch of golden sand, palm trees, blue sky and the flow of the sea, attracts a large number of tourists to Maravanthe.

ORIENTATION

It is located in the Karnataka state at a distance of about 50kms from Udupi.It is on the way from Murudeshwar to Bhatkal, right on the national highway that leads to Panaji, Goa.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The ideal time to visit Maravanthe beach is between the months of October to March.

Kanchugoda village

This is a small village situated next to the Turtle Bay Resort and depicts the lifestyle of fisher folk.

Sowparnika River

The Sowparnika River is a beautiful river, flowing down from the Kodachadri Hills and running parallel to the Maravanthe beach. It is believed to carry with it the essence of 64 medicinal herbs. If you happen to go for a boat ride in this river you can get to visit the Maharajaswamy Temple in Padukone village and also the Kodachadri Hills.

Baindur

Baindur, at a distance of about 45 kms from Maravanthe beach is another lovely spot to spend hours lazing in its sun drenched beach.

Ottinane

Close to Baindur is Ottinane. It is a picturesque place with overhanging cliffs and an ideal place to watch the sun go down. Driving some further kilometers from the beach you will enjoy the Belaka Theertha Falls.

St Mary's Island

The St Mary's Island at a distance of about 6-8 km from the Malpe beach can be accessed by the ferries. It is a small delightful island which spreads over an area of about a square mile and not more than 250 yards in width.

It is a group of small islands with an impressive geological formation of hexagonal pillars of volcanic rocks. Vasco da Gama was supposed to have reached one of these islands which he called 'EI Padron de Santa Maria' in 1498, before reaching Calicut.Again this place is beautified by the coconut palm trees in and around the island.

Kodachadri Hills

The Kodachadri Hills is situated at about 35 kms from Maravanthe.A trek through this hill takes you through the dense jungles of the Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary and enjoy the task of bird watching.

Mookambika Temple

This is a very old religious temple at about 37 kms away from Maravanthe.The noon puja rituals, when a green sapphire necklace is places on the deity are worth-watching.

Shopping

There is nothing much to shop in Maravanthe other than few shops on the way to beach provides the compulsive shoppers to buy some colorful collectibles made of conch shells.

Eat Outs

Though there are not too many outlets for food, you can order from the resorts where you are accommodating. There also Dhabas along the highway which have decent dining center. The names of few restaurants are

HOW TO REACH

By Air

Mangalore is the nearest airport. From here one can hire taxi or can pick a bus to reach the beach.

By Trains

The nearest rail head is Kundapur (18 km) and Mangalore (110km). Take a bus or hire a taxi from here to reach the beach.

By Road

Maravanthe is 50 Km from Udupi, 110 Km from Mangalore, 275 Km from Goa and 450 Km from Bangalore. Regular bus services to Maravanthe are available from all these above places.
